Two Sports Journalists And Their Contribution To Sports Development In Nigeria -By Isaiah Ogedegbe

Sports journalism has gained a large foothold not just in Nigeria today, but also in the whole world. There are many sports journalists in Nigeria, but most notable of them are these two: the late Olajide Ayodeji Fashikun who died in January 2019 and Chief Tracy Chapele-Ugo. While the former used English Language in his sports reportage, the latter used Nigerian Pidgin in her sports reportage.

OLAJIDE FASHIKUN
He was born in Kaduna in 1965. He was a sports journalist who gave sports journalism a new definition, the man with the acidic pen who wrote truth to power. He was very outspoken, using his popular website Gong News to expose fraud and corruption.

TRACY CHAPELE
She was born about 35 years ago to the late Chief Oletu Chapele, the Okugbe of Udu Kingdom. She graduated from the University of Benin with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Literature. She has made many uneducated Nigerians to enjoy sports with her use of Nigerian Pidgin. She is one of Africa’s best female Nigerian pidgin sports commentators.
